SPECIALIST DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS Diagnostic assessments can be conducted for any person requiring a full diagnosis of dyslexia. They can be useful when a person needs a clear diagnosis of dyslexia (or other specific learning disability) and screening results are not sufficient evidence. Post 16 assessments Whether in the work place or in higher education, many people do not realise that they are dyslexic. For many, a diagnosis comes as a relief as it is an explanation for difficulties they may have encountered throughout their lives. This initial assessment will confirm if a person is dyslexic as well as identify strengths and weaknesses. We offer assessment for adults which lasts up to four hours, during which time you will be asked to complete a series of different tests that will provide a profile of your strengths and weaknesses. The assessment looks at background, education, ways of thinking, learning and problem-solving techniques as well as reading, writing, spelling and possibly maths. The assessor can offer you a brief evaluation of their key findings at the end of the assessment and will also prepare a comprehensive and confidential report of the results with future recommendations for action. A post assessment consultation is included in the cost of your assessment as it is important that you have the opportunity to discuss the findings with a professional who can offer you further advice and guidance. If the report is needed to support an application for the Disabled Student Allowance it should be conducted post 16 years of age. Assessments conducted for young people (post 16) still in education- these reports can be used to provide information for Exam Access Arrangements (extra time, readers, writers, separate room etc) at GCSE, A Level and Further Education. For school aged children The assessment will involve a series of psychometric tests to measure spatial and verbal memory, reading and spelling in a standardised way so that results can be compared with others within the population of the same age range. The assessor will provide key findings at the end of the assessment and you will subsequently receive a comprehensive confidential report setting out the results in details. The report outlines strengths and weaknesses, and indicates if an individual has a specific learning difficulty, such as dyslexia, as well as providing important information about specific learning needs and suggestions for action. Where can the assessment take place? In your home or on the premises of dast staff. How long does the assessment process last? The assessment itself will last anything between to 4 hours. A post assessment feedback session can be provided which will last up to 40 minutes. Reports can be provided within 10 working days of the initial assessment. How much does an assessment cost? Between £400 and £500 pounds, depending on the purposes of the assessment.
